Personal History & Notes
Personal History | Mika was born in the year 2023, the only child of two middle-aged scientists, on a world far away from Federation space and of a people who called themselves the Ka’bu. Raised in the scientific community, he was encouraged to study in the same science field as his parents: bio-sciences, where he discovered he had a strong interest in Molecular biology, especially genetics. He grew to be one of the Ka’bu’s top scientists in the field, and was so dedicated to his work while also concerned about the politics in the world around him, that although he came close, he never committed himself to a relationship, nor had children. After his parents passed, he buried himself even more into his work. A technologically advanced and vain species, that explored and colonized their own part of the galaxy, the Ka’bu ended up on a path of self-destruction. Mika was among a group of ‘enlightened’ who could see what was happening and whose warnings were ignored. They left their star system, finding a planet in the Briar Patch where they could isolate themselves from their old world and the threat of others. It would become their new homeworld where they could live simply, independent from technology, and in peace. It was then they renamed themselves the Ba'ku (from the Ka'bu term meaning "the Peaceful"). It wasn’t long before they discovered the metaphasic radiation that's contained within the planetary rings of the Ba'ku planet, and the regenerative effects, which helped them to live for centuries. Mika was in his forties when he left Ka'bu, but because of the metaphasic radiation, he became healthier. Not only his aging had stopped, but he was rejuvenated a few years, making him look around ten years younger. He learned to become a farmer. The soil fertile, and the seasons gentle, he was content with his new life, for the most part. The scientist in him would study and observe his people and the world around him. And sometimes he would miss his labs. Daily, he would sit on a lush green hill that overlooked his farm and write his observations, his thoughts, his goals, and his feelings. Mika would also help out medically when someone was ill, injured, or a baby was about to be born. He became sort of a doctor’s apprentice, yet was in no hurry to become more than that. For many, including Mika, there was no rush when it came to many things. This included forming romantic relationships or having children. The concept of time had changed, and life was seen differently. Not all Ba’ku were content with this way of living. Some of the younger members of the colony, first-born on the planet, tried to take control of the colony after failing to convince the majority that new leadership was needed, one that didn’t fear technology like the current leadership did. They failed in getting their point across and were exiled from the planet until they changed their point of view. Those exiled became the Son’a and eventually criminals to the Federation. After the *Son’a attempted and failed to access the metaphasic radiation particles within the rings of the Ba'ku planet in 2375, the planet became a protectorate of the Federation, with a Starfleet outpost in orbit, a science/medical team studying the particles. Not long after a space station was built, replacing the outpost. The Ba’ku were full members of the Federation by 2378. With mixed feelings over what had happened with the Son’a, Mika had befriended a few of the scientists who would come down to the planet to visit and talk with the Ba’ku. He became intrigued by them and their experiences in Starfleet, and over time, started to feel that although his people had failed, the Federation and Starfleet were proof that technology combined with wisdom did work for the future of many worlds. Then discovering that even with the advances in technology and medicine, there was still such a strong need of medical research, advances, and aid, he started working with the outpost scientists, eventually feeling compelled to join Starfleet and began preparing for Starfleet Academy. • Starfleet Academy At Starfleet Academy, where one could join at almost any point in their adult years, where the majority of new cadets were in their mid-twenties to mid-thirties, Mika didn’t appear out of place there, but he felt it at first. It took him a little time to adjust to the wide variety of cultures and races there and to adapt to the new technology. With help from a counselor, he learned to open his mind more, feeling more comfortable in the process, picking things up more easily. It didn’t take him long to start forming some friendships and to comfortably answer basic questions on what it was like to be a Ba’ku. Although he had started to adapt and make friends, Mika often fought feelings of guilt and homesickness. An unease from how his people had handled their own with a differing viewpoint on technology. The blind fear over technology had overcome any enlightenment his people had claimed to have. It left him questioning his own choices and feeling ashamed at times of himself and his people. During Mika’s sophomore year, those feelings had morphed into loneliness and depression, and he went back into counseling. Because of his extensive scientific knowledge as a civilian scientist, considered one, Mika easily qualified for a three-year fast-track course, earning a General Science Degree while still specializing in Molecular Biology Research, Genetics, Cyberbiology, and Cybernetics. Proving himself to and impressing his superiors, it wasn’t long before Mika was utilizing his skills by helping out at Laboratories for both Starfleet Medical and the Federation Science Council. • Search and Rescue Pipeline Course Convinced by a crewmate that it would be beneficial, Mika joined, completed, and passed 'The Pipeline' eighteen-month SAR course. He was primary trained in Evacuation, cross-trained in Technical Support, qualifying him as an EMT. Near the end of his first assignment on the USS Lakota, Mika was unexpectedly 'gifted' with a cat named Janus by his roommate who had left for another assignment before him. The cat had previously belonged to his roommate's former girlfriend, and not wanting the cat to be abandoned once again, Mika took her with him on his next assignment: the hospital support ship, USS Solace. Having formed a bond, the cat has remained with him ever since. While serving on the hospital support ship, USS Solace, Mika was invited to join the Akira Advanced Genetics Research Unit. Honored and looking forward to the research and knowledge that could be shared, Mika accepted, having received permission to attend there for a year. In 2390, Mika was offered the position of Science Department Lead on the Starbase in Ba’ku’s orbit. Finally feeling ready to return home, he gladly accepted. En route to his new assignment, the ship Mika was on received a distress call. Being good Starfleet officers, they answered it to find a ship of unknown origin drifting in space. The captain of the vessel requested simply a tow back to his homeworld, and the Starfleet ship obliged. Arriving at the alien's world, the senior crew were invited to a celebratory dinner for the safe return of their ship's crew. At this affair, it was revealed, during conversation, that the ruler's second son was afflicted with a malady for which this planet had no cure. Being alien to this world, they thought that perhaps these Federation people could help them. The captain of the Starfleet ship agreed to allow his crew (and one passenger) to assist if they could. Mika was happy to help and immediately set to work on the problem. Unfortunately, it became quite clear very soon that there was nothing he could do without technology that this planet simply did not have. He would have to tell the ruler this, but he hesitated. It was good that he did, for not long after that decision, something highly unusual happened. A small wormhole opened up at one end of the lab he had been working in and spit out a woman who, upon questioning, turned out to be a scientist in her own right. Her fields, however, would help him to help the boy. While they still could not cure him, the two working together managed to construct implants that would augment the boy's systems and give him a longer life expectancy. By the end of this time, the two had begun to become close. But as often happened with her, the multiverse had other ideas. The Galthor, who had not finished with their alterations of her, had sent a Retrieval Team to bring her back to Medical Garrison 47. Her intentions were to take the threat away from Mika and these people by running, making them follow her. But the wormhole she had opened to do this had opened closer than she had expected to where she and Mika were standing. Both of them were pulled into the swirling vortex. When the wormhole spit them out, it was onto a space station. In acclimatizing to the place, they learned that it was called Farside Station -- the Humans called it that because they couldn't pronounce the Koryndan word for it -- and that it belonged to a Mega Corporation called ShadowDragon Enterprises. It didn't take too long to realize that she couldn't guarantee him that she could get him home given the QRS's tendency to do whatever it pleased like a TARDIS. So they decided to make the best of it and find employment. This proved easy enough given that this ShadowDragon Enterprises was hiring new employees and contractors for a special project called FarVoyager. A bit of research gave them enough information about the company and the project to pique their curiosity and make them apply. He applied for the position of Chief of Science on the large-as-a-city ship, but after an interview with the owner of the company, Ashlyn, she offered him the position of Executive Officer instead, saying that she needed his skills with people much more than she needed yet another scientist, though those skills might get used as well during the long voyage. Karyn was also accepted and informed that she would be working with the Builders' IPD Technician because of her extensive experience with wormholes and devices that created them. It seemed that they would be allowed by the universe to continue their journey together. |
